I’ve attended Boo at the Zoo, Mesker Park Zoo’s annual Halloween event, every year for the past 6 years. However, this year it just wasn’t in the cards, but that didn’t stop us from visiting the animals in October. I’d recommend everyone who lives near Evansville to enjoy Mesker Park Zoo and Botanical Gardens. My daughter and I explored the zoo a few weeks ago, let me tell you what we saw.
Mesker has a new featured animal, their first Komodo Dragon. This large lizard exhibit can be found in the the upstairs of the Hippo/Rhino building, where birds used to be displayed. This remodeled exhibit gives the lizard plenty of space to live and plenty of frontage for people to look. The opposite side of the room has also been remodeled, giving a number of different snakes new homes.
The decorations during October are my favorite part of the Zoo. As you can see, my daughter loved the enormous Cheetah sculpture made of round hay bails. Also, there were plenty of spooky skeletons, witches, and mummies scattered around the park in fun places.
We even got to be hands on with our favorite white Amazonia porcupine. There were handlers available that helped my daughter feed the porcupine bananas and corn. Because it wasn’t nearly as busy as normal Boo at the Zoo hours, we had plenty of time to play with the animal. This is always the most memorable part of any zoo, for me, is the interaction.
We might have to start making it a tradition to visit Mesker Zoo in October, just not during Boo at the Zoo. I’m very happy about the crowds for the Halloween event, but it’s a bit too much for me and my family to enjoy. Be sure we’ll continue buying season passes and attending at the slower times of the day.
